A payout of 35:1 means a €1 bet wins €35 and you keep your €1 — €36 back in total.
Why the house always has an edge
If roulette were fair, a straight-up bet on a 37-pocket wheel would pay 36:1. It pays 35:1, and that one-unit difference is the house edge: 1 ÷ 37 = 2.70% in European roulette and 2 ÷ 38 = 5.26% in American roulette. Every standard bet on a given wheel has the same edge, except the five-number bet on the American table (7.89%), which is the worst bet in roulette.
| Example | European | American |
|---|---|---|
| Average loss per €100 bet | €2.70 | €5.26 |
| Average loss per €100 on red with La Partage | €1.35 | — |
Roulette table layout
The roulette table has the numbers 1–36 in three columns of twelve rows, with 0 (and 00 on American tables) at the top. Inside bets go on the numbers and the lines between them; outside bets go on the boxes around the grid.
| Area of the layout | Bets placed there |
|---|---|
| On a number | Straight up |
| Line between two numbers | Split |
| Outer edge of a row | Street |
| Corner where four numbers meet | Corner |
| Edge between two rows | Six line |
| “1st 12”, “2nd 12”, “3rd 12” | Dozens |
| “2 to 1” at the end of each column | Columns |
| Red, Black, Odd, Even, 1–18, 19–36 | Even-money bets |
Roulette wheel numbers and colours
Red numbers: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 30, 32, 34, 36. Black numbers: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 29, 31, 33, 35. Zero is green. The numbers on a roulette wheel add up to 666.
European wheel order: 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25, 17, 34, 6, 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33, 1, 20, 14, 31, 9, 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26.
Call bets on the racetrack
French and many live tables have a racetrack — an oval showing the wheel order — for bets on sectors of the wheel:
| Call bet | Numbers covered | Chips |
|---|---|---|
| Voisins du Zéro | 17 numbers around zero (22 to 25) | 9 |
| Tiers du Cylindre | 12 numbers opposite zero (27 to 33) | 6 |
| Orphelins | 8 remaining numbers in two groups | 5 |
| Neighbours | A number and two on each side | 5 |
Payouts in multiplier roulette
Lightning-style roulettes add random multipliers to some numbers in each round — for example 50x to 500x. To pay for this, a normal straight-up win pays 29:1 instead of 35:1. Outside bets usually pay as usual. The overall return is similar to or slightly below standard roulette, but results are far more volatile.
Inside and outside bets: chance per spin
Inside bets are placed on the numbers themselves, outside bets on large groups around the grid. The table shows how often each bet wins on a European wheel with 37 pockets. The lower the chance, the higher the payout — but the house edge on all of them is the same 2.7%.
| Bet | Numbers covered | Chance to win | Payout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight up | 1 | 2.7% | 35:1 |
| Split | 2 | 5.4% | 17:1 |
| Street | 3 | 8.1% | 11:1 |
| Corner | 4 | 10.8% | 8:1 |
| Six line | 6 | 16.2% | 5:1 |
| Dozen / column | 12 | 32.4% | 2:1 |
| Red/black, odd/even, 1–18/19–36 | 18 | 48.6% | 1:1 |
On an American wheel every chance is a little lower because there are 38 pockets, while the payouts stay the same — that is where the higher 5.26% edge comes from. The only exception is the five-number bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which pays 6:1 and has an even worse edge of 7.89%.
Zero is the reason outside bets lose half the time and a little more: when the ball lands on 0, every red/black, odd/even and high/low bet loses (unless the table uses La Partage, which returns half the stake).
Neighbour bets and announced bets
Besides the classic grid, the racetrack lets you bet on sectors of the wheel. A neighbour bet covers a chosen number plus two numbers on each side of it on the wheel — five chips in total, each paying 35:1 if its number hits. Announced bets such as Voisins du Zéro, Tiers du Cylindre and Orphelins are just fixed sets of splits and straight-ups, so their odds and payouts follow the same table above.
How to calculate a roulette bet
Winnings = stake × payout. Total returned = winnings + stake. If you spread chips over several bets, add the results: for example €5 on red and €1 on 17 (red) returns €10 + €36 = €46 if 17 comes up, €10 if another red number lands, and nothing on black or zero.
