How to Play Baccarat — Rules, Bets and the Baccarat Table

In baccarat you do not play a hand yourself — you bet on which of two hands, Player or Banker, will end closer to 9, or on a Tie. Cards are dealt by fixed rules, so the game takes seconds to learn. The Banker bet has the lowest house edge, about 1.06%.

Baccarat meaning and history

The word baccarat comes from the Italian baccara, meaning “zero” — because tens and picture cards are worth nothing in the game. The version played in casinos today is Punto Banco: the house deals both hands, and players only choose where to bet. It is one of the most popular casino games in Asia and a fixture of every live casino.

Baccarat rules: card values

CardValue
Ace1
2–9Face value
10, J, Q, K0

A hand's value is the last digit of the total. If the cards add up to 15, the hand is worth 5; 7 + 8 = 15 → 5; 9 + 6 + 8 = 23 → 3. The highest possible value is 9.

How does baccarat work: a round step by step

  1. Place a bet on Player, Banker or Tie (side bets are optional).
  2. The dealer gives two cards to Player and two to Banker.
  3. If either hand has 8 or 9 (a “natural”), the round ends immediately.
  4. Otherwise a third card may be drawn by the fixed rules below.
  5. The hand closer to 9 wins. Equal values are a Tie.

The third card rule

Nobody decides whether to draw; the rules are automatic. Player acts first: with 0–5 Player draws a third card, with 6 or 7 Player stands. If Player stands, Banker draws on 0–5 and stands on 6–7. If Player drew, Banker's decision depends on its total and Player's third card:

Baccarat bets, payouts and odds

BetPayoutChance to winHouse edge
Banker1:1 minus 5% commission≈ 45.9%≈ 1.06%
Player1:1≈ 44.6%≈ 1.24%
Tie8:1≈ 9.5%≈ 14.4%

If the result is a Tie, Player and Banker bets are returned. The Banker wins slightly more often because it acts after Player — that is why casinos charge 5% commission on Banker wins. In no-commission baccarat a Banker win on 6 pays only half, which brings the edge to a similar level.

The baccarat table layout

A baccarat table has betting areas for Player, Banker and Tie, plus side-bet spots such as Player Pair and Banker Pair. Live tables also show scoreboards — the bead plate and big road — that record previous results. They look like a pattern to follow, but each round is independent: past results do not change the odds of the next hand.

Dragon baccarat and the Dragon Bonus

Dragon Bonus is a side bet that your chosen hand will win by a natural or by a margin of 4 points or more. The bigger the margin, the bigger the payout — up to 30:1 for a win by 9 points. The side bet is fun, but its house edge is several times higher than on Banker or Player.

Example rounds

Three short examples show the rules in practice.

  • Natural. Player gets 4 and 5 (9), Banker gets K and 7 (7). Player has a natural 9 and wins at once — no third cards.
  • Player draws. Player has 3 and 2 (5) and draws a 6 — total 11, so 1. Banker has 4 and 2 (6); since Player's third card is 6, Banker must draw. Banker gets a Q and stays on 6 — Banker wins.
  • Tie. Player has 7 and Q (7) and stands; Banker has 3 and 4 (7) and also stands. The result is a Tie: Tie bets pay 8:1, Player and Banker bets are returned.

Baccarat betting systems

Martingale, Paroli, Fibonacci and the 1-3-2-6 system are popular at baccarat tables. They change how you size bets, not the odds: each hand still has the same house edge. Martingale, which doubles after every loss, can hit the table limit after a short losing streak. If you use a system, treat it as a way to structure the session and keep a strict stop-loss.

SystemRuleMain risk
MartingaleDouble after a lossHuge bets after a losing streak
ParoliDouble after a win, reset after 3 winsSmall gains, wins can vanish in one hand
1-3-2-6Fixed sequence of units after winsSame edge, only bet size changes

Baccarat strategy: what helps

  • Bet mostly on Banker — it has the lowest edge.
  • Skip the Tie bet: 8:1 does not compensate for its low chance.
  • Treat road patterns as entertainment, not as a forecast.
  • Decide on a fixed stake and a stop-loss before the session.
