Poker Rules — How to Play the Poker Card Game and Texas Hold'em

In poker every player tries to make the best five-card hand or to make the others fold. In Texas Hold'em, the most popular version, you get two private cards, five community cards are dealt to the table, and four betting rounds decide who takes the pot. You can learn the rules in free poker games online before playing for money.

Poker rules in brief

Poker is a family of card games played with a standard 52-card deck. Hands are ranked the same way in almost every variant — from high card up to a royal flush (see the poker hand rankings chart). Players bet chips into a common pot. A hand ends in one of two ways: everyone except one player folds, or two or more players reach the showdown and the best hand wins.

TermMeaning
PotAll chips bet in the current hand
BlindsForced bets posted by the two players left of the dealer button
CheckPass without betting when no bet has been made
CallMatch the current bet
RaiseIncrease the current bet
FoldGive up the hand and any chips already in the pot
All-inBet all remaining chips

How to play Texas Hold'em step by step

  1. Blinds. The small blind and big blind post forced bets so there is something to play for.
  2. Pre-flop. Each player receives two hole cards face down. Starting left of the big blind, players fold, call or raise.
  3. Flop. Three community cards are dealt face up. A second betting round starts with the first active player left of the button.
  4. Turn. The fourth community card is dealt, followed by a third betting round.
  5. River. The fifth community card is dealt and the last betting round takes place.
  6. Showdown. Remaining players reveal their cards. Each makes the best five-card hand from any combination of their two hole cards and the five board cards.

The dealer button moves one seat clockwise after every hand, so each player takes turns at the blinds and at the best position — acting last.

Other poker card games

Omaha

Each player gets four hole cards instead of two and must use exactly two of them with three board cards. Hands are stronger than in Hold'em, so a flush or a full house is often needed to win.

Seven-card stud

No community cards: each player gets seven cards of their own, some face up, and makes the best five-card hand. It was the main game before Hold'em took over.

Casino poker against the house

Casino Hold'em, Three Card Poker, Caribbean Stud and video poker are played against the dealer or a machine, not against other players. You do not need to bluff; the casino keeps a fixed house edge, just like in blackjack or roulette. These games are available in the Mostbet casino and live casino.

Free poker and free poker games online

Free poker uses play-money chips. It is the easiest way to learn the order of betting, position and hand values without risk. Demo versions of video poker and casino poker run in the browser without download. Keep in mind that people play looser with play money than with real stakes, so habits from free tables do not always work at real ones.

How to play poker better: beginner tips

  • Play fewer hands. Strong starting hands (big pairs, A-K, A-Q) win far more often than random cards.
  • Use position. Acting last lets you see what others do before you decide.
  • Bet for a reason. Either for value with a strong hand or as a bluff that tells a believable story.
  • Watch your stack. Never buy in with money you need for other things; keep a bankroll of many buy-ins.
  • Take breaks. Tilt — playing angry after a loss — costs more than any wrong call.

Poker etiquette at online tables

Act in turn, do not stall when the timer runs, and keep the chat polite. Using two accounts at one table, sharing hole cards with friends or running bots is forbidden and leads to account closure.

Online poker on Mostbet

Mostbet offers poker in several forms: casino poker and video poker in the RNG section, poker tables in the live casino, and — depending on the region — a poker room with Hold'em and Omaha against other players. Registration gives access to all of them with one balance, and the welcome promo code NEW3000 applies to the first deposit under the rules of the offer.

FAQ

What are the basic poker rules?

Players bet into a pot and try to make the best five-card hand or make everyone else fold. The best hand at the showdown wins.

How many cards do you get in Texas Hold'em?

Two private hole cards. Five community cards are dealt to the table, and you use any five of the seven.

Can I play poker online for free?

Yes. Play-money tables and demo versions of casino poker let you play without deposits.

What is the difference between poker and casino poker?

In classic poker you play against other players; in casino poker you play against the house with a fixed edge.

18+Play responsibly

Casino games and betting are entertainment, not a way to earn money. Every game has a built-in house edge, and gambling can become addictive.

Set deposit, loss and session limits in your account before you play, never chase losses and take breaks. If gambling stops being fun, use self-exclusion and contact a support service such as BeGambleAware or Gamblers Anonymous.

Online gambling is restricted or banned in some countries. Check your local law before registering — this site does not encourage playing where it is not allowed.
